Orchestrating the Recycling Chain

The Project is coordinated by Valgroup, a pioneering company in the mechanical recycling of food-grade plastics, through its three recycling units: Minas Gerais (MG10), Pernambuco (PE2) and Rio de Janeiro (RJ2). This proposal includes the OMA Ativos Ambientais, responsible for the development, financing and monitoring of this project, and Fênix Reciclagem, a Collection and Recycling company (FPE), located in Pernambuco, which supplies post-consumer, post-commercial and industrial plastic waste to PE2. FPE is also a recycler and is responsible for the proper disposal of waste and by-products.

It should be noted that the products from the collection activities in this project are mostly single-use post-consumer plastic waste (disposable packaging), pressed into bales, and the products from the recycling activities are plastic materials in the form of extruded and decontaminated pellets, in addition to ground by-products or in the form of flakes, usually shipped in big bags.

location and
importance of the project

In the context of the project, the collection activity is carried out by Fênix Reciclagem in the State of Pernambuco. Meanwhile, Valgroup units participate in several operations to encourage and facilitate collection and sorting. These actions have a positive impact on this supply chain, as they guarantee or even increase the quantity and quality of raw materials for recycling. These Valgroup units (RJ2, PE2 and MG10) were selected due to their growth potential, with already established expansion plans, as well as their positive socio-environmental impact on the regions they occupy.

Proponents

A OMA Ativos Ambientais is a company committed to promoting the transition to a sustainable economy in which socioeconomic development and environmental preservation go hand in hand. Through the development of innovative projects, we seek to generate environmental assets that contribute to the decarbonization of the economy and the mitigation of socio-environmental impacts.

The approach of OMA is based in sustainable projects that drive the development of local communities and that have a positive impact on the environment and society.

Valgroup recognizes the importance of sustainability and is committed to the circular economy. As one of the pioneers in Brazil, the company signed the Global Commitment of the New Plastic Economy, demonstrating its commitment to promoting the recycling and reuse of plastic materials, in addition to seeking innovative solutions to reduce its environmental impact.

The company invests in research and development to support the creation of new materials, processes and technologies that are more sustainable and efficient. Valgroup is constantly looking for ways to optimize its production chain, reduce the consumption of natural resources and minimize waste.

Fênix Reciclagem has been essential in the solid waste recycling and disposal sector for several years. With total respect for people, the environment and environmental laws, the company plays a key role in the reception, separation and correct disposal of a variety of solid waste.

Its efficient system allows Fênix Recycling to receive waste of different types, such as plastic, paper, PET bottles, rubber and cardboard, ensuring that each one is imported.

The company is proud to serve customers who are concerned about not using natural resources when there are alternatives available on the market.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

Plastic bottles can be converted into many different products. Think of all the plastic toys, tools, electronics and other plastic items in your own home.

Plastic collected from your homes, businesses and local recycling centers is sent to Material Recovery Facility (MRF), which separates plastic and non-plastic, and/or Plastic Recovery Facility (PRF), which sorts plastic by type. .

These facilities use identification equipment, such as an optical sorter or manual sorter, to distinguish between different types of plastics.

The plastic goes to a reprocessor and is then melted down and extruded into new recycled plastic pellets. These pellets are sold to producers to manufacture new products.

– For every ton of plastic recycled, 7,4 cubic meters of landfill space is saved. Plastic recycling also reduces the amount of non-renewable energy used in the plastic manufacturing process, as creating new items from existing plastic uses significantly less energy than creating plastics from raw materials.

– Recycling reduces the pollution that can come from the chemicals used to make these bottles. It also helps to reduce the amount of garbage thrown into landfills, so that our garbage does not take up as much space.

- Recycling also creates jobs for people who collect recyclable materials and work at sites that transform them into new materials.

The most commonly recycled plastics are:
– Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) – plastic water bottles and trays
– High-density polyethylene (HDPE) – milk cartons and shampoo bottles
– Polypropylene (PP) – margarine pots and ready-to-eat trays
– Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) – plumbing and piping
– Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) – food and shopping bags
– Polystyrene (PS) – plastic cutlery

Each time plastic is recycled, the polymer chain gets shorter and therefore its quality decreases. The same piece of plastic can only be recycled 2-3 times.
